Primary Election Day

Primary Election Day

Author: Communications Committee/Tuesday, September 1, 2015/Categories: Politics

Thursday, September 10, 2015 is primary election day. Go vote! Most of the races this year are for local legislative offices such as the county legislature, county executive, etc. There will be one special election for one statewide Senate seat this year in the Binghamton, NY area.

Primary elections are held to narrow down candidates who are members of the same party. The primary elections determine which candidate will appear on the ballot during the general election in November. To vote in a primary election, you must be a registered member of a party. For example, to vote in a Democratic Party primary, you must be a registered member of the Democratic Party. If you are not a registered member of a party, you cannot vote in the primary elections.

It is important to note that when you register to vote in New York, you have to either designate your party affiliation or register as no party affiliation. If you register as no party affiliation, this means that you don’t affiliate with any particular party and are not eligible to vote in any primary elections. You will only vote in the general election in November.
